Architecture, engineering, urban planning…these are just some of the new and exciting topics sixth graders will be engaged in here at MS 582. Students will be working with teachers and professionals through our new partnerships to explore these concepts. Learning through this new lens will help students see the world as professionals, as we are always striving for college and career readiness.

ELA

Students will explore the concept of urban

planning through the analysis of various texts

and multimedia sources. Over the course of the year, students will engage in discussion based around the theme of urban planning, engage in fictional, argumentative and informational writing, as well as develop projects that connect to our urban planning theme.

SCIENCE

Students will investigate many concepts

throughout the year. As they explore concepts

such as simple machines and weather, students

will relate these concepts to our school’s theme

of urban planning. Students will plan and design scientific inventions, technology, and ideas that

can help improve a community.

ART

This year students will analyze their community as urban planners, engineers, and architects. Students will use the influence of their community to inspire their creativity while creating their projects. Through the artistic process, students will explore many different concepts of these professions.

MATH

Students will explore standards based mathematical concepts as they relate to engineering, architecture, and urban planning. Students will engage in class discussions, self/peer evaluations and revisions, and work collaboratively as they apply standard based mathematics to real world situations and problem solving concepts.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students will study and explore ancient civilizations. Keeping the concept of urban planning at the forefront, students will think about urban planning as it connects to culture in ancient cities and relate it to present day.

TECHNOLOGY

All projects and activities will be based on urban planning and design. Some of the topics students will focus on are: City Design, Community Development, and Graphic Communication through both individual and group planning.

HYDROPONICS

Through this course, students will study and

explore the process of applying life science,

physical science, and chemistry concepts in growing food hydroponically; a modern solution that lowers the inputs of water and energy needed to sustain

a food system. At the end, students will have the skills necessary to plan a crop calendar and dish, which they will cook with ingredients from the hydroponic lab.
